Overview

Patagonia is a vast, sparsely populated region shared by Chile and Argentina at the southern tip of South America. On the Chilean side, Torres del Paine National Park is the crown jewel: granite towers rising above turquoise glacial lakes, hanging glaciers, and windswept steppe roamed by guanaco and condor.

Puerto Natales, a small port town on the Ultima Esperanza Sound, serves as the gateway to the park. From here, trekkers set out each morning into some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Earth, returning each evening to warm hospitality, hearty Patagonian lamb, and a cold Austral beer.

WEATHER

Patagonia is famous for four seasons in one day. Pack windproof and waterproof layers even in summer (December to February), and expect strong winds in Torres del Paine year-round. The trekking season runs October through April; snow can close trails outside this window.

WILDLIFE

Keep an eye out for guanaco, Andean condor, and, with patience and luck, puma on early-morning drives into the park. Rheas (Darwin’s ostrich) are also commonly spotted on the pampas.

LANGUAGE

Spanish is the local language. A friendly “Hola” and “Gracias” go a long way. Many guides in the park speak English.
